TORCH 5804 Robotics Team Wins District Event

Collegiate School’s robotics team, TORCH 5804, won the FIRST Chesapeake Robotics District Qualifier held over the weekend.
The event featured 37 teams competing in 72 qualifying rounds at Arthur Ashe, Jr. Athletic Center. At the end of two days of competition, TORCH 5804, which aligned with the teams Blue Cheese and Defenders of the Multiverse, was named the event winner.

The robot’s design this year includes advanced features, which are the reason the team also earned the Excellence in Engineering award.

“We felt confident about the design of the robot going into the competition,” said Upper School math teacher and team mentor Kristine Chiodo. “This is a cooperative effort, and I am thrilled to be part of such a great team.”

In addition, Ms. Chiodo was named a finalist for the Woodie Flowers Award, which honors team mentors.

“I was honored and touched to be recognized by our students,” she said about the nomination.

TORCH 5804 heads next to Blacksburg, Virginia, for the next FIRST Chesapeake District Qualifier on March 21-22.
