Cougar Classic Features Athleticism and Enthusiasm

The annual Cougar Classic basketball game, featuring a near-record-setting lineup of Collegiate School faculty and staff, took place last evening in front of a capacity crowd in Seal Athletic Center.
Before the big game, students in JK-8th Grade hit the courts of Seal and Jacobs Gym to play knockout games in between munching on snacks. The highly anticipated Cougar Classic, which is organized by the Parents’ Association, featured more than 30 players from all School divisions — including Head of School Penny Evins — as well as auxiliary services, the physical plant, communications and athletics.

After enthusiastic warmups, players energized the crowd of students and their families, who cheered on their favorites. The green team came out with an early 4-0 lead until Tung Trinh, Head of the Middle School, scored the first points for the white team. It looked as though the white team had the game in hand, stretching its lead to 11 with eight minutes to go in the half. But the green team clawed its way back in the second half to tie with less than three minutes left. In the end, Middle School physical education teacher Kevin Coffey sealed the thrilling win for white, 48-47.

Cougar Classic is a favorite among Collegiate’s traditions, said event co-chairs Autumn Harbour and Annie Benjamin.

The entire community comes together — teachers, faculty, staff, parents and students — to show school spirit and embrace the camaraderie and enjoyment of athletics,” Mrs. Benjamin said. “It’s a night of fun for the whole family.”
