Seniors Model Solutions to Real-World Math Problems
Twenty seniors in Upper School math teacher David Bannard’s Math Modeling class are participating in the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM), an international high school contest.
The contest, sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP), tasks students to use mathematics to present solutions to real-world modeling problems. The highly competitive exercise attracts about 1,000 teams from around the world. In this contest, teams of four students are expected to solve a problem in a 36-hour period.
The team of Deven Pandya, Leslie Albrecht, Caitlin Long and Avery Schebell worked in the Sandbox in Sharp Academic Commons on their problem: Create a mathematical model to explain energy consumption in public spaces. Nearby, Akum Dhillon, Ethan Whitehead, John Pollard and Charlie Schutt looked into what effect a plastic water bottle ban would have on a city.
Judging will be completed in January 2020, and the results will be posted on COMAP’s website after Feb. 1, 2020.
