Upper Schoolers Commit to Honor

Pledging to commit to one of Collegiate School’s core values, all Upper Schoolers this morning took part in an annual assembly during which they signed the Honor Code in front of their peers and advisors.
Honors Council student co-chairs Carter Lowe and Charles Hidell explained the significance of the Honor Code.

“As a member of the Collegiate community, you are expected to uphold this Honor Code,” Carter said. “It says a lot about who you are as a person, and if you compromise your honor by lying, cheating or stealing, not only are you letting down your teachers and peers, you are letting yourself down.”

Charles described how honor is demonstrated daily at Collegiate.

“Honor is the reason why as a community we can afford to leave our backpacks unattended, our lockers unlocked and our phones charging in the front hall,” Charles said. “We hope that you will commit to this community of honor, integrity and trust. It will only be effective if we all embrace it.”

Patrick Loach, Head of the Upper School, addressed the students with his thoughts about the importance of this core value.

“It really is the foundation of the relationships that we have here, that we know that we can trust one other because we have that Honor Code in place,” he said. “So can Collegiate make you a better person? Yes. If you choose to embrace the core values. If you choose to be honorable.”

Each grade level then dismissed to various rooms on the Upper School campus to begin signing the Honor Code. Before they left, Mr. Loach reminded students that honor is about choices.

“I hope what you think about today as you sign your name and shake the hand of your Honor Council representative and your advisor is that you have committed to this code,” he said. “You are choosing honor.”
