Collegiate Faculty and Staff Return, Prepare for a New Year

Collegiate School faculty and staff gathered in Oates Theater this morning for the annual All School Opening Meeting, presided over by new Head of School Penny B. Evins.
Mrs. Evins, who began her tenure on July 1, welcomed 366 faculty and staff members, including 30 who are new to the community, to the 2019-20 school year — the 105th year of Collegiate.

Collegiate Board Chair John W. Martin ‘78 offered his greetings and spelled out the reasons why Collegiate is such a great community: Caring, Open-mindedness, Love of Learning, Leadership, Empathy, Gratitude, Integrity, Accountability, Traditions and Excellence.

He spoke of how important faculty and staff are in the lives of students and encouraged those in the audience to make every interaction significant.

“This whole place is wired for teachable moments,” he said. “Welcome back and make your teachable moments count.”

Mr. Martin then introduced Mrs. Evins, who spoke of the important role of each and every faculty and staff member plays.

“I see every one of you as a teacher,” she said. “I believe the youngest JK students and our seniors, as well as your colleagues and guests on our campus, are watching all of us and learning from you.”

She continued, saying how passionate she feels about the School’s mission and in intentionally focusing on this “big work.”

“I ask that you join me in committing yourselves to this shared vision, wherever you may find yourselves throughout your busy and impactful days ahead,” Mrs. Evins said.

In closing, she said she hopes faculty and staff embarked on an exciting and purposeful year.

“Let’s go forward with green, let’s pause with gold, and consider how the small moments make the big lessons more possible,” she said.

As is tradition at the meeting, faculty and staff mentors introduced new Collegiate community members to those in attendance. Prior to that, Mrs. Evins announced the following faculty and staff members with 10 years of service: Rhiannon Boyd, Leon Brown, Melissa Newcomb, Missy Roberts, Katie Roski, Beth Wilson and Kimberly Zandler. To mark the honor, each received his or her own Collegiate chair.

Also today, David Bannard, Rives Fleming ‘83 and Andrea Miller were honored for 30 years of service.

Mrs. Evins proceeded to recognize the following faculty members with awards for their dedication and passion:

Susan Wiley received the 2019 Class of 1977 Anne Jones Staff Award.
Jan Rodgers received the 2019 Andrew Jackson Brent Award.
Mil Norman-Risch received The 2019 Ann Griffin Award for Excellence in Teaching.
