New Essay Writing Workshop Offered to Rising Seniors

The first of three new college essay writing workshops for rising Collegiate School seniors took place this morning, led by Upper School English teacher Bart Thornton.
Fifty students, armed with laptops, participated in an in-depth discussion about college admission essays. Mr. Thornton led the students in guided brainstorming activities and gave them time to draft topics and outlines. Members of Collegiate’s College Counseling Office also were on hand to answer questions and offer guidance.

For the past four years, the College Counseling Office has offered the College Application Jumpstart workshop in August. This year, Mr. Thornton and the College Counseling staff agreed that students would benefit from a beginning-of-summer workshop, in which they could come up with essay possibilities.

“We hope this will relieve some of the stress of senior year for our participants,” he said.

A second workshop will be held tomorrow (June 4), and a third on Friday, June 14. The free and optional workshops are open to all Collegiate rising seniors.
