Kindergartners Spearhead “Shop for a Cause” Event

Collegiate School Kindergartners teamed up with Saxon Shoes for a "Shop for a Cause" event that kicked off this past weekend, benefiting foster care through United Methodist Family Services.
The event stems from a service learning project the students completed earlier this spring for the second year in a row. The Kindergartners opened a shoe store in Centennial Hall to learn about math, economics and social studies. After visiting Saxon Shoes to research the business, the students collected shoes from the Collegiate community. The shoe sale raised more than $460, which was donated to help buy new shoes for foster children across Virginia through UMFS.

The Saxon Shoes weeklong event will continue until Friday, May 10. For every pair of shoes a customer buys during the event (and mentions Collegiate), Saxon Shoes and its President Gary Weiner will give $5 to UMFS. Over the opening weekend, Kindergartners “worked” in the store for an hour either on Saturday or Sunday. Many Collegiate community members were on hand to support this service learning project to help foster children.

“We are so excited and are so thankful to Mr. Weiner for his generosity and desire to help,” said Collegiate Kindergarten teacher Beth Anne Shelly, who helped facilitate the partnership between the School, Saxon Shoes and UMFS.
