Collegiate 8th Grader Pushes Himself on the Track

At an April track meet, the Collegiate School 8th Grade boys’ 4x400 relay team pulled out a thrilling, come-from-behind, down-to-the-wire finish, thanks, in part, to Wyatt King.
When Wyatt, the fourth leg of the relay, received the baton, the team was behind about 50 yards. He scorched down the track and caught up with the last runner. Wyatt crossed the finish line in first place by throwing his body forward for the win.

“It was exciting and also indicative of the perseverance and hard work of our 8th Grade boys track team!” said coach Jan Rodgers.

Wyatt’s determination serves him well, since, Coach Rodgers says, he will try any event — long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, relays — she asks him to.

“He holds himself to a very high standard, but even when he does not ‘do his best’ in his own words, he moves on to the next event with a fresh mind,” she said. “He does not let each event define him.”

Wyatt embodies Collegiate’s values, including love of learning and excellence, said Coach Rodgers.

“These events are all new to Wyatt and he volunteers to try anything,” she said. “He is coachable. I correct him and he is glad for the constructive criticism. He even takes the warm up and dynamic stretching seriously.”
