Collegiate 4th Graders Bring American History to Life

Collegiate School’s annual 4th Grade presentation of An American Mosaic took place this morning in the Estes Multipurpose Room. The event highlights the students’ yearlong study of U.S. history and the famous Americans who helped shape the country.

Each year, students choose how they want to participate in the production. Wearing period costumes, some 4th Graders played instruments and performed songs, dances and recitations for parents and guests. Others created artwork depicting important historic individuals that was displayed throughout the Lower School.

It is important for the 4th Graders to begin to understand the perspectives and diverse stories of those who fought for the rights promised in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, said 4th Grade teacher Heather Garnett.

“The stories of historic figures such as Tecumseh, Sojourner Truth, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Jefferson and Maggie Walker represent the many like them who have fought for these rights,” she said. “These stories come alive and are deeply felt by all through song, dance, instrumental play, speeches and artwork completed by the 4th Graders."
