Collegiate 5th Graders Begin Service Learning Project

This week, Collegiate School 5th Graders kicked off a cross-curricular service learning project to explore what should become of the abandoned Pump House, located on the north bank of the James River. Students heard from Joe Costello, founder of Friends of the Pump House, who presented information about the historical site.
In the coming weeks, students will take a field trip to the Pump House to learn more about it. After that, the 5th Graders will meet several times a week in small groups to create a prototype of what they think the Pump House should be used for in the future. The project will culminate with students presenting their ideas to experts in community.

Mr. Costello, who loves educating people about the Pump House, said he looks forward to hearing the students' ideas about how to renovate the building.
