Book Gathering Shares Story of Creative Problem Solving

Collegiate JK-4th Graders participated in the Lower School's second Book Gathering this week, which was centered around the theme of sustainability - one of Collegiate's eight Pillars of Responsible Citizenship.
Lower School music teacher Christine Hoffman read the book "One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia," which tells the inspiring story o five women who dealt with their village’s plastic trash problem by developing a recycled plastic purse project. In the process, the women realized economic empowerment. Lower School students also had an opportunity to view a brief video of the Gambian women depicted in the book, which was penned by Miranda Paul and illustrated by award-winning artist Elizabeth Zunon.

Before Ms. Hoffman read to students, JK-8th Grade Visual Arts Department Chair Dana DuMont shared images and information about the recycling currently taking place in the Lower School and compared it to the sustainability efforts of women in Gambia.
