Collegiate Scores Homecoming Victory

Collegiate School’s Homecoming today was graced with nice weather, a campus full of returning alums and a varsity football win.
Alums enjoyed morning and afternoon activities hosted by the School’s Alumni Office, then joined several hundred current Cougars and Collegiate friends at Grover Jones Field for an early afternoon game versus local rival St. Christopher’s School.

The two teams went into halftime with the score tied 21-21. Football fans cheered as senior players and their parents took the field to be recognized, followed by the 2018 Homecoming Court.

Annie Mahoney was named this year’s Homecoming Queen. (Homecoming King Zaed Karabatek was announced on Friday morning during the Homecoming Pep Rally.) Other members of the Homecoming Court this year were: Riley Bowling, Eliza Goggins, Selam Herring, Eliza Howard, Anne Claire Quindoza, Robbi Beran, Michael Brost, Clay Coleman, Shaan Kapadia and Tucker Surgner. They congratulated the Class King and Queen before leaving the field in time for the game to resume.

The Cougars held their own against the Saints, with running back Charles Armstrong rushing 28 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Nigel Williams completed 14 of 27 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Lew Rice kicked 5 extra points. Collegiate scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, defeating St. Christopher's 35-21. Students rushed onto the field to celebrate with and congratulate the players.

Collegiate alum and current parent Neely Markel ‘96, who is also the Alumni Board President, called the day one for the memory books.

“Homecoming showcases Collegiate at our best,” she said. “From the cheering in the stands, to the pep band’s music to the games of catch by the Lower School playground to the class of 1968 gathering back on campus for their reunion luncheon, this is the day we all come together to cheer, “'Go Cougars!'”
