A New School Year, Another Great Start

You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so...get on your way!
— Dr. Seuss

Dear Collegiate School Community,
I am hopeful that summer break is proving to be a nice respite for your family, allowing opportunities for meaningful time together. Soon, another chapter of the Collegiate story will begin, and I have no doubt that as Dr. Seuss declares in the much-quoted lines above this letter, together we have great places to go and amazing mountains to climb.
As always, the summer schedule at School is a busy one. Our campus remains active with the Summer Quest program in full swing — serving nearly 1,300 campers in 175 different camps. In addition, the faculty and staff are doing all the things necessary to be ready for your family’s arrival on Aug. 28.

Back to School Reminder
Although we are weeks away from Opening Day, it is important to share information with you now that will help prepare us all for the 2018-19 school year. I encourage you to review this Back to School website carefully. Most notably, it is essential that we continue to make campus traffic safety a priority. In that regard, I am pleased to inform you that our second Henrico police officer will be helping out with traffic during drop-off and pickup times during the school year. Please take a few minutes to review our traffic patterns and schedules included in our Back to School information.

Campus Improvements
Similar to most summers, we have several Mooreland Road campus projects underway, and all of these initiatives are on schedule. Highlights include:
The renovations to Oates Theater are almost complete and this amazing space will be ready for our students when they return to school in August. The project involved the reconstruction of the lower level patron seating area and the construction of a second level mezzanine, providing the capacity to seat the entire Upper or Middle School division, including faculty. In addition, the reconstructed (curved) seating bowl at the lower level will provide enhanced sight lines to the stage. Other program components include acoustical improvements, upgrades to the lighting and sound systems, and addition of new backdrop line sets. All of these components will collectively help the theater appear and function as “brand new.”

The construction of the Stephen P. Adamson, Jr. High and Low Ropes Course will get underway shortly and should be completed by early September. This outdoor personal development and team-building structure will be located within an existing stand of mature trees behind the Collegiate Business Office, set approximately 100 feet from Mooreland Road. This site is very convenient for access and use by our students during the school day and also has the benefit of being surrounded by mature vegetation. Low elements of the course will be based on the ground, or slightly above the ground, and high elements will be constructed in trees and require a belay for safety. The high and low ropes course supports our Middle and Upper School curricular and extracurricular programs.

  • Replacement of the West Gym roof system.
  • Re-painting, re-staining and replacement of worn exterior trim and replacement of the boiler system and abatement of Jacobs Gym.
  • Completion of our solar power installation on the Mooreland Campus, at the Sharp Academic Commons and Centennial Hall.
  • Renovation of South Science Room 200 to create a new Middle School Science Lab.
  • Renovation of North Science Room 107 to include new cabinetry and storage space.
  • Partition and renovation of Watt Library and Technology Building Room 124 to create a relocated Lower School conference room.
  • Pedestrian lighting upgrades between Flippen Hall, Jacobs Gym and the Cougar Shop/Admission building.
  • Various painting and carpet projects throughout campus.
Looking Ahead
Please enjoy your final weeks of summer break and know that we are eager to see you back on campus soon. As always, I thank you for your continued support of and commitment to Collegiate School.

Sincerely,
