Capstone Explores Sustainable Solutions to the Future of Food

Collegiate School students enrolled in the senior Capstone class, Sustainable Solutions to the Future of Food, spent the semester considering the following question, “How can we ensure that people have access to safe, healthy, affordable food in a way that can be both environmentally and economically sustainable?”
The emphasis on sustainability and civic engagement involved learning from local farmers, critically acclaimed authors, as well as a service learning component with the Lower School garden.

The culminating project utilized design thinking to consider how Collegiate might increase its sustainability initiatives. Students recommended that Collegiate leverage land adjacent to the existing outdoor classroom on Pagebrook Road for sustainable farming. Lessons related to farming at that location would be integrated into the JK-12 curriculum and allow for after-school and summer student opportunities in partnership with a local farmer.
