Global Public Health Capstone Explores Challenges for Organizations

Seniors enrolled in the Global Public Health senior Capstone class at Collegiate School spent the second half of the spring semester working on service learning consulting projects with four nonprofits in the public health sector.

Students worked domestically with Bon Secours and Remote Area Medical and internationally withThe John Dau Foundation and World Pediatric Project. The seniors were tasked with finding ways to address some of the unique challenges facing each nonprofit.

The Bon Secours team created a community health needs assessment for high-school aged students in the greater Richmond region. Students working for Remote Area Medical developed a strategy to recruit sufficient volunteers for mobile medical clinics. The John Dau Foundation (JDF) group analyzed public awareness of the work JDF is doing in South Sudan with an emphasis on their social media presence. The World Pediatric Project team developed an outreach strategic plan for student service opportunities in the greater Richmond metro region.

Tyler Agee ‘09, a project mentor and Collegiate alum currently serving as Program Manager for Bon Secours' Community Health Services, graciously invited all project groups and their professional mentors to attend the final presentations at the Bon Secours Center for Healthy Living Sarah Garland Jones Center in Richmond’s East End in early May.
