Collegiate Middle School Students Move on to Upper School

Collegiate 8th Grade students gathered in the Seal Athletic Center this morning for their final exercises as they bid farewell to Middle School.
Head of School Steve Hickman welcomed attendees and congratulated the 137 graduates as well as their parents, who he said merited praise.

“You deserve recognition for surviving Middle School,” he said, to chuckles from parents.

Mr. Hickman told the class that they had come a long way, but their journey of self-discovery was just beginning. He concluded with these words of advice:

“The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday,” he said. “Congratulations to the Class of 2022. You are moving up to the Upper School.”

Charlie Blair, Head of the Middle School, also congratulated the future 9th Graders on being great leaders.

“You have excelled in the classroom, on the stage and on the athletic field,” he said. “You have set a positive tone for the rest of the Middle School students. Congratulations on a job well done.”

The two SCA co-chairs, Jay Seevers and Molly Woods, addressed their classmates.

Jay talked about how the class has had its ups and downs, but classmates were there for each other.

“Our grade has remained a team supporting each other,” he said.

Molly expressed how she believes class members will do well in Upper School and will take advantage of all the opportunities that await them.

“As we go through Upper School, we will use the skills we have learned,” she said. “I don’t know what the future holds, but the Class of 2022 has a bright one.”

Mr. Blair then introduced Middle School faculty members, who handed out multiple awards as part of the ceremony.
