Local College Dean Explores Cultural Issues with Upper Schoolers

Dr. Corey Walker, Vice President and Dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, visited Collegiate School today to discuss the issues of race, place and space with Upper Schoolers who are studying human rights, the statues on Monument Avenue and the culture of the City of Richmond.
Dr. Walker, who took the helm at the VUU School of Theology in July 2017, holds degrees from Harvard and Norfolk State universities and from the College of William & Mary. He has lectured internationally on topics related to African American social, political and religious thought and has served on the faculty of the University of Virginia in addition to chairing the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University.

This afternoon, he engaged students in the senior Capstone River City class, the International Emerging Leaders-Americas class and a Sculpture class in conversation about what it means to be human, and how an understanding of individuals' similiarites and differences can better inform students' perspective as well as their artistic lens.

"Think about all of the people who have left an impact on you," Dr. Walker said. "We read the human body and we can read space as well. All of this impacts how we engage the world."
