A Message from Keith Evans, Head of School
Dear Friends,
Over time, the definition of an "excellent" school has evolved as the world has changed and our understanding of teaching and learning has grown. For example, not that long ago schools and the classrooms in them were teacher-centered and students found their days populated with worksheets and chalkboards. Today, teachers engage students in stimulating projects and exchanges that web students together with one another and, through technology, with a global community. Our understanding of "excellence" in classroom practice has thankfully changed for the better.
Likewise, not that long ago, schools were segregated and creating a diverse learning community was not only discouraged but, in some cases, prohibited by law. Thankfully, we changed and our appreciation for the richness that a variety of traditions, backgrounds and experiences brings to a school community grew as well. We now understand that, to prepare our students for citizenship in our diverse democracy and engagement with a rapidly globalizing world, we must teach them in schools that are welcoming and ready to honor the differences represented among members of their communities. These more inclusive schools also serve the needs of all of their students more effectively and with greater integrity.
Diversity has thus become a central component of the standard of excellence for school communities. Here at Collegiate, we embrace this new standard with a sense of excitement, wholehearted commitment and anticipation. We know that as we grow in diversity we will enrich our classroom and our community, giving our students a foundation of self-awareness, confidence and openness to the world that will serve them, and equip them to serve others, throughout their lives.
Sincerely
Keith Evans
Head of School
