Dave Schools '83 Listens In at Jazz Band Practice

"Blown away" is how professional bassist Dave Schools '83 of the wildly successful jam band Widespread Panic described his impression of the Collegiate Jazz Band this afternoon.
In town a couple of days early for his gig at our Centennial Concert on Friday night, Mr. Schools took time to visit campus and attend the Jazz Band's rehearsal with new director Brian Hooten and former director Mike Boyd. The students were getting ready for their first appearance of the year, and they ran through a spectacular rendition of Quarter Master (Snarky Puppy) that showcased all sections of the band and had Mr. Schools tapping his toe. His feedback? "I am impressed! ... I wish I'd had something like this when I was a student here." He went on to talk about a variety of topics related to the teamwork involved in playing in a group, his path to reaching the point of playing to 100,000 fans, and the difficulty of not being able to read music.

Mr. Schools encouraged the students to play music with friends outside of school, too, and, after dismissal, he spent time talking with several members of the Jazz Band including drummer Zach Bostic '18 and bassist Adam Kimbrough '17. Many thanks to our old friend Dave for visiting Collegiate today, and we're looking forward to seeing him on stage Friday night.

Tickets to the Centennial Concert, Friday, Sept. 18, are still available online -- don't miss this great show!
